BBC WORLD NEWS AMERICA GARNERS THREE NOMINATIONS FOR BUSINESS AND FINANCIAL EMMYSŪ

Washington DC – November 5, 2009 – BBC World News America has been nominated for three prestigious Emmy® Awards for Business and Financial Reporting.

Executive Producer Rome Hartman comments: “Obviously, there has been no more important story over the last year than the economy. We're thrilled that the Academy has recognized both the fine work of our BBC journalists, and our overall 'global' approach to economic coverage. When it comes to economic issues and events, what happens in America affects the rest of the world, and what happens all around the world directly affects Americans. We try to 'connect those dots' day in and day out in our business and economic coverage.”

The categories and nominations are:

Outstanding Coverage of a Current Business News Story in a Regularly Scheduled Newscast

·Tokyo in the Downturn

BBC World News America anchor Matt Frei presented a series of special reports from Japan revealing everything from a unique trend in homelessness affecting the youth to radical attempts by companies to rapidly diversify their output in an effort to weather the tough economic times.

Outstanding Interpretation or Analysis of a Business News Story in a Regularly Scheduled Newscast

·China Rising

BBC correspondent Paul Mason embarked upon a 1,000 mile journey along one of China’s oldest export routes to report on the underlying issues that are affecting the Chinese economy.

·Return to White Horse Village

Last year, BBC World News America won a Peabody Award for White Horse Village – a poignant three-part report detailing a Chinese farming village’s transformation into a city. This year, BBC correspondent, Carrie Gracie, travelled back to what was left of White Horse Village to witness first-hand how the landscape and its people had transformed.

Earlier this year BBC World News America received three nominations in marquee categories at the News & Documentary Emmy® Awards bringing the program’s total Emmy® nomination count to six.

Hartman adds, “BBC World News America has been on the air for just a little over two years. To garner so many nominations against such fine competition is a real tribute to the hard work and FINE work of our program team, and of BBC journalists all around the world.”

The newscast, which airs weeknights on BBC AMERICA and BBC World News, picked up more nominations than both NBC and ABC.

The awards will be presented at a luncheon on Monday, December 7th at Fordham University’s Lincoln Center campus in New York City.
